Atlanta Dream End Pride Month with a Night to Remember
July 1, 2023 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Atlanta Dream News Release
On the final day of June's Pride Month, the Atlanta Dream showed their support of diverse communities by celebrating Pride in their fifth sell-out of the season. Upon entering the arena, fans were greeted by an archway of rainbow-colored balloons that led down to the arena seating.
Every seat had a rainbow tie-dyed rally towel with "PRIDE" across the front and fans could purchase t-shirts from the Pride 2023 Collection.
The WNBA continues to uplift and support its players throughout the month and beyond, showing that Pride is more than just a month, it's a movement. Gwen Bowers and Kim Scott were Dream season ticket holders years ago and returned recently.
"The WNBA is doing it right. They're showing what diversity looks like." said Scott giving kudos to the league. "And so, I applaud them, I applaud the work that they're doing. Keep up the good work."
The Dream's Pride Night featured a national anthem performance by the Gay Men's Choir and before the game, Dream Head Coach Tanisha Wright praised the team and the WNBA for their support of inclusiveness.
"It's amazing. I mean, this league is so much more than the game of basketball. Over and over we prove it." said Wright. "Every single time we gather as a collective, we affect change. Over and over. We give people an opportunity to be themselves, to be free."
Artist Victor Jackson entertained the crowd during halftime with his vocal skills. His message of "You deserve to live. You deserve to love. You deserve to dance" resonated throughout the arena.
As a player in the league, Dream's Danielle Robinson is pleased with the support shown, "It's awesome to play for a league that really lets us be ourselves, be authentically ourselves, supports not only ourselves but, like, our families as well."
First time season ticket holders Julia Autry and Cathy Granger have enjoyed their season thus far, and being supporters of a team with Pride Night just make it that more special.
"To me, it's amazing to come in and see this. It's nice to be able to have a place where you can come and it's inclusive, "Cathy reflected as she took in the experience. "It's just a dream come true to see the Dream do this and to be here in my lifetime and be free to be who I am."
