Atkinson Extends Streak In Loss To Devils

Albany, N.Y. - Cam Atkinson registered a point for the fifth-straight game with a first-period goal on Saturday night at the Times Union Center, but the Springfield Falcons (18-9-2-3) suffered a 4-1 setback at the hands of the Albany Devils (12-11-1-6).

Atkinson has eight points (2g-6a) over the last five contests and has collected a goal or an assist in 14 of the last 15 games. He is third in the league with 38 points (17g-21a) on the season.

The Devils opened the scoring 12:12 into the first period. Mattias Tedenby took the puck around a pair of Falcons, broke away in the left corner and pushed the puck to the slot. Stephen Gionta took the puck and backhanded it by Falcons netminder Allen York, giving Albany a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons went on the game's first power play late in the opening frame, and took advantage of it to tie the contest, 1-1. Tim Erixon's shot from the right point touched Matt Calvert and Ryan Craig before deflecting to Atkinson at the top of the crease. Atkinson backhanded it past Devils goaltender Keith Kinkaid, evening the contest at 17:39.

After York made a great kick save on a shot by Chris McKelvie from the left circle, Tedenby slammed the rebound in from the low slot at 10:23 of the second period, putting Albany back in front permanently, 2-1.

Moments after the Devils' third power play ended, Mike Hoeffel centered a puck for Tim Sestito, who guided it by York at 5:54 of the final stanza, increasing Albany's lead to 3-1.

With York pulled for the extra attacker late, Bobby Butler lofted a puck into the gaping net from center ice at 19:10, closing out the scoring, 4-1.

York (1-3-0) set aside 24 shots as the Falcons fell to 0-2 against their Northeast rival. Kinkaid (10-7-3) let in just one of Springfield's 22 attempts.

Springfield closes out the weekend on Sunday in Providence, battling the Bruins at 3:05 p.m.
