Astros Purchase Chavez Contract

Metairie, LA – The New Orleans Zephyrs, the Class AAA Pacific Coast League Affiliate of the Houston Astros is pleased to announce that the Astros have purchased the contract of Zephyrs Catcher Raul Chavez. To make room for Chavez on the 25 man roster, the Astros have designated Gregg Zaun for assignment with the intention to grant him his unconditional release. The Astros have also activated infielder Jose Vizcaino from the 15-day Disabled List and optioned infielder Eric Bruntlett to New Orleans.

Chavez, 30 from Valencia, VZ., batted .273 (97x355) with six home runs and 47 RBI in 101 games for the Zephyrs this season. In his last eight games for the Z's, he has batted .370 (10x27) with three RBI. Chavez joined the Zephyrs on April 24th after opening the season with Houston and hit the Astros' first pinch-hit home run of the season on April 16th at San Francisco in his first appearance of the campaign. He walked in his only other plate appearance of the season for the Astros.

In 26 games for the Astros this season, the 25-year old Bruntlett hit .255 (12x47) with one home run and four RBI. He batted .260 (99x318) with two home runs and 27 RBI in 76 games for the Zephyrs earlier this season.

The Zephyrs, who are tied with Oklahoma for second place in the PCL East Division 5 ½ games behind Nashville, continue a five game series with the Memphis Redbirds on Thursday at 7:05 PM. in Memphis.
