June 17, 2022 - Southern League (SL)
Knoxville Smokies News Release
Pensacola, Fla. - The Tennessee Smokies (32-29) came up just short against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (32-24) for the fourth straight night, falling 3-1 Friday night at Blue Wahoo Stadium.
Despite the loss, Smokies starter RHP Javier Assad dealt six brilliant innings allowing just five hits and one run on the night while tying a career-high nine total punchouts. The outing is Assad's third quality start of the season and cements him third in the Southern League with a 2.64 ERA.
The only run Assad allowed came in his final frame of the night in the sixth inning. Pensacola's Bubba Hollins lined a ground ball down the first-base line to score J.D. Orr and break open the scoreless ballgame.
The Smokies quickly responded a half-inning later in the top of the seventh. Alexander Canario launched his eighth home run of the season off Blue Wahoos starter RHP Bryan Mitchell (W, 1-0) to lead off the inning and tie the game even at one a piece.
The run would be the only of the night for the Smokies as Pensacola packed the final punch in the bottom of the seventh. A two-run shot from Griffin Conine off LHP CD Pelham (L, 1-1) lifted the Blue Wahoos out in front for good, 3-1.
The Smokies will play game five of the six-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Saturday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium featuring Admiral Fetterman Field in Pensacola. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. ET. The Smokies will send RHP Riley Thompson (0-1, 7.50 ERA) to face the Blue Wahoos' RHP Jeff Lindgren (0-1, 2.91 ERA). Fans can listen to the action on 99.1 The Sports Animal or by visiting https://www.milb.com/tennessee/fans/audio-listen-live.
