
Gonzalez Clubs Three-Run Double, M-Braves Fall to Barons 6-5

Gonzalez up to five RBI in series, Dean goes 3-for-4 BOX SCORE PEARL, MS - Yariel Gonzalez clubbed a three-run double in the fifth and Justin Dean picked up three hits but the Birmingham Barons (25-35) scored five runs in the sixth to win 6-5 over the Mississippi Braves (26-34) on Thursday night at Trustmark Park.
The M-Braves lost their sixth game in a row, continuing their longest losing streak of the season.
In the third, Jalen Miller led off the inning with a base hit. Dean followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Then, CJ Alexander lined a two-run single into right center for the first two runs of the game to make it 2-0.
Dean posted his first three hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with a double, two steals and two runs. Dean is 6-for-12 with a triple, a double and two stolen bases in three games this series.
Alexander upped his total to 31 RBI this season, tied for the team lead with Drew Lugbauer.
Birmingham got a run back in the fourth to pull to within one 2-1.
In the fifth, Gonzalez smacked a three-run double down the right field line to make it 5-1.
Gonzalez continues to have a huge series, going 4-for-11 with a double and five RBI in three games.
The Barons took their first lead of the game 6-5 with five runs off two homers in the sixth.
LHP Jared Shuster retired the first nine batters before running into trouble later in his outing. Atlanta's No. 9 prospect allowed six runs off six hits with three walks to six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
Lugbauer smashed a double down the right field line with two outs in the seventh, putting the tying run in scoring position. Gonzalez struck out the next at-bat as Birmingham stayed in front 6-5.
Riley Delgado went 2-for-4 to improve to a .295 batting average, which is eighth in the Southern League.
The M-Braves bullpen performed well again, combining for 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief. RHP Justin Maese highlighted the group with 1 2/3 scoreless innings and two strikeouts, dropping to a 2.81 ERA in 25 2/3 innings this season.
The fourth game of the series is on Friday at Trustmark Park. RHP Alan Rangel (2-2, 4.82) makes the start for Mississippi against RHP Jason Bilous (3-5, 6.18) for Birmingham.
