Ashworth's Pitching, Mainers Offense Blaze Past New Bedford

June 11, 2012 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

The Sanford Mainers hopped on the bus at nine o'clock in the morning on Sunday to make their way to New Bedford, Massachusetts to take on the Bay Sox. Up until this point, the Moose had been sent to the loss column three times, starting their season 0-3.

With a total of 4 runs and 14 hits over the span of those three games, the Mainers offense looked to be off to a slow start.

However, the Mainers would come out with their first victory as a stellar pitching performance by EJ Ashworth in combination with an explosive offense, propelled the team past the Bay Sox 10-4.

The Mainers would make their mark right away, with back-to-back walks given up to Troy Black and Jose Torralba to lead off the game.

After a balk was given to Bay Sox starting pitcher, Colton Cross, the Mainers had two in scoring position before any outs were recorded in the top of the first.

Anthony Hajjar would ground out to the short stop, but was able to walk back to the dugout with an RBI as Black would come in to score the game's first run.

Jordan Betts added another to the board, crushing a triple down the right field line for the Mainers first extra base hit of the season.

With two outs in the inning, Betts crossed the plate to make it a 3-0 advantage after right fielder, John Gorman sent a pitch down the right field line good enough for a double.

The Mainers didn't stop there, grabbing one more run on an RBI single by Matt Weckerle.

EJ Ashworth started the game with decent padding on the scoreboard and used it to his full advantage. The right hander pitched 7 innings allowing only 1 run on 6 hits, 3 in which came through the first 4 innings. The only run charged to Ashworth was a solo home run given up to Bay Sox catcher, Sebastian Salvo in the fifth inning.

Ashworth ended his afternoon striking out 3 on 90 pitches.

The Mainers would score 6 more runs over the course of the game. In the top of the seventh, Sanford chalked up 2 more runs with Weckerle scoring on a Cam Young double followed by an RBI ground out by Black.

The Bay Sox would enter into their half of the eighth trailing the Mainers 10-1, but capitalized on fielding errors on Torralba and Betts, enabling New Bedford to score 3 more runs.

That's how the score would stay. Brandon Alphin would pitch the ninth allowing only one hit that did not matter the next at bat, as a fly out would end the game.

The Mainers put 16 hits up on the board - two more in one game than in the first three games combined. Improving their record to 1-3, the Moose will get a break tomorrow, but will be back in action on the road again to face the Keene Swamp Bats. Colin Egan is set to take the hill with first pitch at 6:30pm.
