Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Danbury, Conn. - The Vermont Mountaineers used a 10 run sixth inning to overcome an 8-6 defecit en route to a 18-11 victory over Danbury in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Monday night at Roger's Park. Vermont saw four homeruns hit by four different players as they won their first road game of the year and improved to 2-3 on the young season.
For the fifth consecutive game, the Mountaineers scored first putting three runs up in the top of the fourth led by Logan Pierce's solo homerun. Vermont would then load the bases and see an RBI fielder's choice by Sean Trent (Maitland, Fla./Florida) before a wild pitch allowed Greg Partyka to trot home. Another run would come home in the top of the second inning when Casey Brighton (Hyde Park, Vt./SUNY-Plattsburgh) singled to lead off the inning and scored on Rob Kelly's RBI double to giver Vermont a 4-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Richie Ochoa (Friday Harbour, Wash./Washington State) worked in and out of trouble all night but was tagged up in the top of the third when Tom Zengel launched a two-run shot of his own to cut the lead in half. He would find a way out of the inning and watch as his team scored two more runs in the top of the fourth on RBI singles from Pierce (Troy, Ala./Troy) and Kelly (Rancho Santo Margarita, Calif./Saint Anslem).
With a 6-2 lead, Ochoa struggled in the bottom of the fourth as the Westerners (1-2) hit three straight singles to load the bases. After a passed ball cut the Mountaineers lead to 6-3, Ochoa would get Zengel to strikeout but gave up and RBI single to Zach Shank which ended his night. He would turn the ball over to Mike McCallister who proceeded to get two strikeouts but did give up a two RBI double to tie the game prior to getting out of the inning.
McCallister then gave up a one out two RBI double to Zengel that put Danbury on top 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, the Mountaineers offense would pick up their pitching staff in the top of the sixth with an offensive explosion.
Vermont began the frame with three straight walks from reliever Isaac Sterman to Pierce, Kelly and Greg Partyka. He was immediately pulled in favor of Greg Ostner who gave up an RBI single to Michael White (East Orange, N.J./Louisville) to bring the Mountaineers within one. After a Sean Trent RBI groundout to tie the game, Ryan Karl (Towaco, N.J./Louisville) blasted a three run homer to left field to put Vermont up 11-8. Ricky Boas would then single and steal second before Brighton reached on an error by the second baseman Josh Ake followed by both Johnny Mishu and Pierce reaching on consecutive errors to push the advantage to 13-8. Kelly then stepped to the plate and proceeded to smash the second three-run homer of the inning and put Vermont up 16-8. Kelly finished the game going 4-for-5 with five RBI, three runs scored and a walk finishing just a triple shy of the cycle.
With the Mountaineers doubling up Danbury Jacob Kremers (Broken Arrow, Okla,/Harvard) pitched a perfect sixth but labored through the seventh as Danbury scratched across three runs to cut the lead down to three. However, Vermont would add runs in both the eighth and ninth and Kellon Urbon (San Diego, Calif./Cornell) tossed two shutout innings to preserve the win.
Ochoa earned a no-decision in his first start of the summer while McCallister (Warminster, Pa./West Chester) got the win going one and two-third innings giving up just two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two. The Mountaineers scored in every inning except the third, fifth and seventh while each hitter reached base. Danbury starter Fred Breidenbach also got a no-decision going three and a third giving up six runs on eight hits. The Westerners used six different pitchers with Sterman taking the loss after giving up three runs without recording an out in the sixth.
Vermont returns home tomorrow night when they host the North Adams SteepleCatts at 6:30 p.m. at Montpelier Recreation Field. It will end a string of six straight games to begin the year for the Mountaineers before an off day Wednesday.
