Davenport, IA - The Peoria Chiefs fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits 2-1 for the second straight day and finish the season 76-63, the sixth most wins in team history. The Chiefs and River Bandits will meet in the first round of the playoffs with game one scheduled for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Peoria.
The Chiefs defense kept the River Bandits off the board in the first inning as Yariel Gonzalez threw out Marty Costes at the plate from right field on a one-out double by Alex McKenna. Quad Cities scored first with two runs in the third against Chiefs lefty Jake Dahlberg.
Peoria got on the board in the fifth inning against Cesar Rosado. Batting from the left side, Rayder Ascanio launched his fourth home run of the season toward the Mississippi River in right field. The next two batters walked but a double play and strikeout kept Quad Cities on top 2-1.
Dahlberg (4-3) took the loss, retiring the last 13 batters he faced. He gave up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three over seven innings. Fabian Blanco retired all three batters he faced in the eighth inning and finishes fourth in the MWL with 44 appearances.
Notes: Despite being promoted August 7, Elehuris Montero is the 2018 Midwest League batting champion with a .322 average and he also led the league with a .529 slugging percentage...He is the Chiefs first batting champ since Eric Patterson in 2005...The .322 average is tied for 10th best in team history and the .529 slugging is tied for fifth best...Gonzalez finished third in the league with a .311 average...Johan Oviedo tied for the league lead in opponents average against at .238...The Chiefs used 55 players on the season, third most all time...The 15 outfielders used is a new team record and with Gonzalez recording a first inning assist Monday, 12 of the outfielders had at least one assist this season...The Chiefs offense set team records for least sacrifices (11, old record 23), stolen bases (73, old record 79), caught stealings (44, old record 47), and most double plays hit into (125, old record 113) while tying the team record for least triples (20)...The team finished with the eighth most hits, eighth most doubles and eighth most home runs in team history...The pitching staff tied the team record with three intentional walks issued and finished with the second most strikeouts in team history (1168 - record 1177 from 2016)...Defensively the Chiefs finished with the second best fielding percentage in team history at .975, just shy of the .977 mark last year...The defense set new records for least errors at shortstop (20), outfield (17) and pitchers (10) while tying the records for least errors at first base (10) and second base (12)...As a result the Chiefs have new record for fielding percentage at shortstop and outfield while tying the record at first base...The Chiefs went 0-10 on the road on Monday this season...Game one of the playoffs is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against Quad Cities...Tickets are also on sale online or at the Dozer Park Box Office with Dugout and Field Box Seats available for $9...The broadcast with Voice of the Chiefs Nathan Baliva and broadcast assistant Danny Frey can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:15 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive and is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network in the Tune-In Radio App...The game is also available to subscribers on MiLB.TV...Video of the game is available to subscribers on MiLB.TV...The Chiefs announced their entire 2019 schedule and it is available at www.peoriachiefs.com.
