Armor Cruise Past BayHawks

SPRINGFIELD, MA JAN. 18, 2011 ‚¬" Last season, the Armor finished with a league-worst 7-43 record. Tuesday night in Springfield the Armor surpassed last year ‚¬â„¢s win total by routing the Erie BayHawks 109-92 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.

The BayHawks trailed by 19 points in the third quarter before cutting the lead to 8 going into the fourth.

Springfield answered by beginning the fourth on a 13-2 run led by recently assigned Craig Brackins and JamesOn Curry.

From there the Armor cruised to victory, defeating Erie for the second straight game. The Armor improve to 8-15, while the BayHawks fall to 15-9.

Both teams benefited from stellar bench play early in the first half.

In the first quarter, Erie guard Tasmin Mitchell scored 11 of his team ‚¬â„¢s 28 points in the quarter, giving the BayHawks a five-point advantage.

Brackins came off the bench to spark a 13-2 run in the second quarter giving the Armor the lead. Jerry Smith, Gavin Edwards and Tre Whitted combined for 14 points off the bench in the first half, which gave Springfield a 14-point lead going into halftime.

The Armor led by as many as 22 points and outscored the BayHawks 36-17 in the decisive second quarter.

Curry led Springfield with 27 points, 20 of which came in the first half. Brackins finished with 23 points and 5 rebounds, while Smith chipped in 22 points on 5-6 from the field and a perfect 12-12 from the foul line.

Erie was led with a game-high 28 points from Mitchell. Blake Ahearn added 18 points and dished out 6 assists before fouling out late in the fourth quarter. Ahearn had missed the teams ‚¬â„¢ meeting on Saturday due to illness.

The Armor will look for their third consecutive victory and fourth in five games on Friday when they play host to the Bakersfield Jam at 7:00 p.m. at the MassMutual Center. The BayHawks head home to take on the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Friday.
