Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Wappingers Falls, NY - The top four batters in the Cyclones lineup combined for six hits and four RBI as the Cyclones defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades by the score of 5-1 on Friday night at Dutchess Stadium. Dominic Hamel (2-0) tossed 6.0 shutout frames for Brooklyn to collect his second win in four starts with the Cyclones.
The teams traded zeroes until the top of the 5th when Brooklyn was finally able to break through. Shervyen Newton got things started when he connected on a 2-0 offering and sent it over the right field wall for his fourth home run with Brooklyn, and eighth overall, to give the 'Clones a 1-0 lead. Rowdey Jordan kept things going with a single before Alex Ramirez had a one-out ground rule double that put a pair of runners in scoring position for Nic Gaddis. Gaddis took advantage of the scoring chance with a single up the middle toscore the pair and extend Brooklyn's lead to 3-0.
Hamel tossed 6.0 shutout frames, scattering four hits and two walks, while striking out six but when he left in the seventh the Renegades were able to get on the scoreboard. Oscar Rojas was first out of the bullpen for Brooklyn and Grant Richardson gave him a rude reception with a one-out blast over the batter's eye in centerfield to trim the Brooklyn lead to 3-1.
The Cyclones tacked on some insurance runs in the top of the ninth after Newton worked a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a single from Rowdey Jordan. Stanley Consuegra wasted no time, connecting on the first pitch he saw, lacing an RBI single to center field to make it 4-1. Alex Ramirez would round out the scoring with a sac fly, his 15th RBI in his last eight games, to make it 5-1.
That's how the game would end as LHP Nathan Lavender faced the minimum over his 2.0 innings of relief to close out the game and collect his second save with Brooklyn.
With the series tied at 2-2 the Cyclones will send LHP Nick Zwack to the mound on Saturday evening at 6:05 PM.
