Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
In what was an unorthodox Friday night at Frawley Stadium, the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Jersey Shore BlueClaws kicked off the evening by completing the final innings of Thursday night's suspended game.
Jersey Shore held a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth inning, where the game would resume play. Neither team was able to generate any offense upon the game's continuation, and the BlueClaws would wind up taking the game by a final score of 2-0. Christian Hernandez and Aidan Anderson came in for relief of Ben Brown and shut the door on Wilmington.
Shortly following was Friday evening's scheduled game between the division rivals, which warranted a similar result. The Blue Rocks struggled to get the offense going again against a top Phillies prospect Mick Abel, and would fall to the BlueClaws 3-0 to be shut out for the second straight game.
The BlueClaws started the game off with a bang, just like in game two of Thursday's double-header. Jersey Shore loaded up the bases with no outs before Carlos De La Cruz got plunked by a fastball to give the BlueClaws an early 1-0 advantage.
In the very next at-bat, Herbert Iser tallied another RBI for Jersey Shore via sacrifice fly to score Luis Garcia. This extended the BlueClaws lead to 2-0, and they would never look back.
Jersey Shore added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, when Baron Radcliff hammered his seventh homerun of the year to dead center field to extend the BlueClaws' lead to 3-0, which would end up being the final score.
The Blue Rocks offense got their best opportunity of the night in the 5th inning, when they loaded the bases with one out and the top of the lineup approaching the plate. Unfortunately, the cards would not play in the Blue Rocks favor, with no runners coming across the plate to score, extending the Blue Rocks scoreless streak.
This game was not lost due to a lackluster pitching performance. Blue Rocks starter Rodney Theophile put his best foot forward, pitching six strong innings, allowing only three hits, no earned runs, while striking out five. Unfortunately, the offense would not get going all night, and Theophile's record would fall to 1-4 on the season.
Mick Abel was just as dominant for the BlueClaws, going six innings, allowing four hits, no runs, and striking out ten, advancing his record to 6-7.
With the Blue Rocks scoreless innings streak now sitting at 19, they will get an immediate opportunity to bounce back and even up the series on Saturday, July 30.
