Arizona United SC Shut out in 2-0 Loss to Colorado Switchbacks FC
April 9, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Phoenix Rising FC News Release
Despite a better second half performance, Arizona United Soccer Club couldn't find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. This was Arizona United SC's fourth consecutive road match to start the season. They will play one more on the road before their USL home opener on April 30.
Neither team created dangerous chances in the match's first 20 minutes. The closest Arizona United SC (1-3-0) came to a chance came in the 12th minute when a dangerous cross into the box nearly found midfielder Gibson Bardsley. But the Colorado Springs (2-0-0) goalkeeper punched the ball away.
In the 22nd minute, Arizona United SC goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski stopped the first dangerous chance of the game, smacking away a shot from point-blank range to keep the match scoreless.
But off the ensuing corner, Colorado Springs' Rony Argueta sent a cross toward the far-right post and found Martin Maybin, who buried the header into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Woszczynski made two more big saves to keep the match 1-0. In the 38th minute Switchbacks' forward Mike Seth locked in on the upper right corner of the net from the top of the box, but Woszczynski made a diving stop to deny Seth a highlight goal. In the 52nd minute, Woszczynski denied Maybin his second goal of the match by dropping down quickly and smothering a shot for the far left post.
But in the 62th minute, Seth eventually found a little daylight between the two central defenders and drove into the box. After his initial shot was saved by a charging Woszczynski, he caught up to the rebound and finished what he started to give Colorado Springs a 2-0 lead.
Arizona United SC's best scoring opportunity came in the 65 minute. Defender Brock Granger came down the ride sideline with the ball before sending it into the center of the box. Forward Chris Cortez's header was cleared off the line by Switchbacks defender Josh Phillips. Then midfielder Luke Rooney picked up the ball in the left corner of the box and fired a shot only to be denied by Phillips, who cleared the ball away again.
Arizona United SC has one more road match to end the five-game trip. They play at Real Monarchs SLC on Friday, April 15, at 6 p.m. That match will be streamed on ArizonaUnited.com. The team opens play at the Peoria Sports Complex on Sunday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. against the U20 Mexican National Team. Then they open USL home play on Saturday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. against Portland Timbers 2.
