RGV Vipers Fall to Austin Spurs in Game 3

Cedar Park, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers were defeated by the Austin Spurs 88-89 in game three of the first round of the NBA Development League Western Conference Playoffs. The Austin Spurs will advance after getting a 2-1 lead in the best-of-three series.

The Vipers started the game shooting extremely well, finishing the quarter with a 22-point lead. Montrezl Harrel outscored the Austin Spurs in the first quarter, scoring 14 points. The first quarter ended 35-13. The Vipers went 4-of-8 from the three-point line.

The RGV Vipers would continue to extend their lead in the second quarter, which at one point extended to a 24-point lead. However, the Austin Spurs would outscore the Vipers in the second quarter to cut into their lead behind Keifer Sykes' 10 points in the quarter. The Vipers would lead 56 to 41 at the half.

The Austin Spurs would seek to bounce back in the third quarter. Sykes would dunk the ball with 5:43 left in the quarter to cut the lead into single digits. Harrel's hook shot and Chris Walker's put back dunk would take the Viper's lead back to double digits, which they would maintain to the end of the quarter. The third quarter would finish 77-65.

In the fourth quarter, the Austin Spurs brought the Viper's lead back to single digits with 3:50 left in the game when Fields' two free throws went in. With 57 seconds left on the clock, Sykes would dunk the ball after a steal to bring both teams even. Cummings would score two free throws after that, followed by a jump shot by Sykes.

The game was decided when Cummings fouled Sykes with 0.4 seconds left after turning the ball over. Sykes would make the first free throw before missing the second one. The Vipers would get the ball back since Sykes' second free throw did not hit the rim. The Vipers would fail to score after the inbound pass and brought their season to an end. The RGV Vipers would only score 11 points in the fourth quarter and finished the game 88-89

Kiefer Sykes led the Austin Spurs in scoring. He scored 31 points after having zero in the first quarter. For the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Montrezl Harrel led the team with 26 points. Jaron Johnson and Chris Walker both finished the game with 12 rebounds.
