Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release
Colorado Springs, CO - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks took down Arizona United 2-0 in the team's home opener at Switchbacks Stadium to earn back-to-back wins to start their 2016 campaign.
The Switchbacks opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as Rony Argueta found Marty Maybin on the cross who was able to head it home to give the Switchbacks a 1-0 lead in back to back games after scoring the first goal of the season in their season opener in Oklahoma City.
"I was trying to run inside to bring them in, and then peel off to the back post," Maybin said of his goal, "it was a nice ball played in and a nice finish."
Following the goal, both teams increased the physicality of the match where 3 yellow cards were issued (Brandon Poltronieri (40'), Martin Maybin (42'), and Jordan Burt (45')) in the final five minutes of the first half. The Switchbacks would take the lead into halftime.
The second half was just as physical as the first half. Mike Seth was able to tally his first goal of the season after Marty Maybin found him on a through ball to double the Switchbacks lead over Arizona in the 62nd minute.
Arizona was nearly able to get one back in the 65th minute but Switchbacks keeper, Devala Gorrick, was able to come up with a pair of tremendous saves that would help him gain his first clean sheet of the season. The Switchbacks continued to apply pressure, but Arizona goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski was also to make a couple of saves, but it wouldn't be enough as the Switchbacks took the decision 2-0.
"Difficult conditions, scrappy game," said head coach Steve Trittschuh, "but, a win is a win."
The Switchbacks will travel to Seattle to take on Seattle Sounders FC 2, next Sunday, April 17th at 6pm MDT. The Switchbacks will return to Switchbacks Stadium on Saturday, April 23rd as they take on new USL side San Antonio FC for Family Day. Tickets are available at switchbacksfc.com or by calling 719-368-8480 x1.
