2006 RATTLERS: The Rattlers enter their 15th season in the 20-year-old AFL eager to put last year behind them. A 7-9 record in 2005 left the team out of the playoffs for the first time since their inaugural season. Despite a slow start, Arizona found life down the stretch, posting six wins in their last eight games. This year's campaign will be guided by new head coach Gene Nudo. Nudo will be on the sidelines for the first time since 1995 when he was a Rattler assistant but he is no stranger to the game as he has been in their front office for the past 12 seasons. He brought back 12 returnees, including QB Sherdrick Bonner, who is one of the league's most prolific passers. Returning for his 13th season, Bonner needs just 37 touchdown passes to become the third player in AFL history to throw for 700. Another veteran returnee, WR/LB Randy Gatewood hopes to become a prime candidate for "Ironman of the Year", an honor he took two seasons ago. The team also brought back FB/LB Bo Kelly, who enters his tenth season with the team. New faces include OS Shannon Culver, a veteran who looks to make a major contribution to the Arizona offense and WR/DB Jeremiah Pope, a promising rookie that was an af2 standout. The Rattlers bring back eight players to their front line, including linemen Wendall Gaines, Kelvin Ingram, and Mark Tucker. Defensively, the team will count on veteran DS Clarence Lawson to lead a backfield that includes four-year veteran Joe Todd, who was a free agent acquisition. K Gary Kral returns as well.
THE SERIES: This will be the 15th overall meeting between the two division rivals and 13th regular season matchup. After winning six straight in Los Angeles, the Rattlers dropped their first game at STAPLES Center during a 59-56 thriller on April 30, 2005. Despite the loss, the Rattlers still hold a 9-5 series advantage, which includes two playoff victories. This will be the second time the two teams meet on opening day. The last time was February 8, 2004 in Arizona. The Avengers took that contest, 51-32 in front of 14,343 at America West Arena.

RATTLER HEAD COACH: Gene Nudo enters his first season as head coach to become the third head coach in franchise history. Nudo joined the Rattlers coaching staff in 1995 as an assistant head coach before becoming a part of the team's front office in 1996. A true pioneer in the AFL, Nudo coached the first-ever Arena Football games in Rockford, Ill. (1986) as well as its "Showcase Game" in Rosemont, Ill. (1987). He would later serve as the Director of Player Personnel and assistant coach for the Chicago Bruisers (1987-88), helping guide them to a berth in ArenaBowl II.
THIS WEEKS QUOTES:
Rattler head coach Gene Nudo on training camp: "Camp was extremely competitive, which made it hard for us when it came time to cut down the roster. All in all, I think we made a lot of progress. We have a good group of guys, but now it will just be about putting the pieces together. I give credit to our other coaches for having a productive camp."
Nudo on Los Angeles: "They always put together a solid team. They, like us, lost a couple of guys to free agency and have some new additions. Their quarterback is a young guy with not much experience, so it's hard to know what he will bring. We expect a very physical game up front. It's always big to start the season with a win, especially with a divisional win. We are anticipating a hard-fought battle."
Nudo on the keys to the game: "Since it is the first full game for both teams, you have to expect penalties and mistakes. The team that keeps their mistakes down will be in position to win. Our guys need to play disciplined football if they expect to come back home with a victory."

SCORING MACHINE: WR/DB Randy Gatewood scored a touchdown in 13 of his 16 games last season. He has a total of 169 touchdowns in his career as a Rattler.
PLAYERS TO WATCH THIS WEEK:
Avenger WR/DB Kevin Ingram: Last season's "Ironman of the Year" will be the biggest challenge for the Arizona defense. Ingram emerged as L.A.'s top receiver last year and returns to the 2006 squad as the team's most potent offensive weapon. The Rattler backfield of veteran defensive backs, Clarence Lawson and Joe Todd, will have to communicate well to stop Ingram. Ingram will probably see more looks than usual with LA offensive specialist Tony Locke on injured reserve. Arizona did well on holding Ingram in their last visit to STAPLES Center, limiting him to just 37 yards receiving.
Rattler WR/DB Randy Gatewood: 2003's "Ironman of the Year" hopes to outshine last year's award winner by replicating the two performances he had against Los Angeles last season. In two games against the Avengers, the two-way star caught a total of 13 passes for 170 yards. He also made an impact on defense, helping hold the Avengers to 33 points in their first meeting. Gatewood has the ability to put points up on both sides of the ball, as he intercepted five passes last season. With offensive specialist Siaha Burley gone to Utah via free agency, Gatewood should become the premier target for Sherdrick Bonner and the Arizona offense.

LAST MEETING WITH LOS ANGELES:
AVENGERS BEAT RATTLERS, 33-29
Courtesy of laavengers.com
Los Angeles, Calif. (April 30, 2005) -- There was a playoff atmosphere at STAPLES Center on Saturday night, and with a postseason berth possibly on the line with four seconds remaining, Avenger quarterback John Kaleo found WR/DB Kevin Ingram in the middle of the field for a game-winning 16-yard touchdown.
Trailing 56-52 with 11 seconds left on the clock, Kaleo made the call for Ingram to run the post-corner route.
"I saw the defender fall down on the post and Kaleo hit me with the ball and I was able to take it in for the touchdown," Ingram said. "This is big. This is a big win for us."
After Arizona WR/DB Randy Gatewood gave the Rattlers the lead late in the game, the Avengers, with their never-say-die attitude, never lost hope.
"We were very confident when we got the ball back with about 30 seconds left," said Avenger offensive specialist Tony Locke, who scored four touchdowns. "With the guys like K.I., Hopkins and myself, we knew we could score."
The 59-56 victory was the first by L.A. in seven tries against Arizona at STAPLES Center. The Avengers used a familiar formula to beat Arizona: force turnovers on defense, score at least 50 points on offense, and find a way to eek out a victory.
"It was awesome," Avenger head coach Ed Hodgkiss said. "I just told the team it was the first time that we have beat Arizona here ... it was the story of this year: a really ugly game, but we were able to hold on and win it."
The win improves L.A.'s record to 8-5 and put the team into a tie for first-place in the Western Division with San Jose, with the showdown between the teams just a week away. Arizona fell to 4-9.
"This places our destiny in our own hands," Hodgkiss said. If the Avengers are able to win their final three regular-season games, they will capture the team's first Western Division title.
In Week 6 at Phoenix, the Avengers had to scrap by the Rattlers, 33-29. Saturday night was no different as L.A. had to overcome offensive specialist Siaha Burley's four touchdowns - three in the first half - and fight off a ferocious second half comeback.
Leading the way on defense for the Avengers was OL/DL Silas Demary, who finished the game with 1.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. He now has a league-leading 11.5 sacks on the season.
Kaleo finished 18-of-26 for 211 yards and six touchdowns. More importantly he threw no interceptions for the seventh time this season.
Locke finished with 10 catches and 166 yards to go along with his four touchdowns, and now has 19 touchdowns on the season. His partner in crime, Ingram, had two touchdowns.
Rattler quarterback Sherdrick Bonner had an outstanding game in a losing cause, finishing 29-of-44 for 364 yards with six touchdowns and the one interception.
Demary and the Avenger defense picked up right where they left off last week and set the tone early. After forcing a fourth down, Demary sacked Bonner, forcing him to fumble the football, which was recovered by OL/DL Luis Almanzar at the Rattler 2-yard line.
The L.A. offense took advantage on its very first play, as WR/LB Greg Hopkins took the handoff from Kaleo and muscled his way across the goal line to give the Avengers a 7-0 lead.
Arizona responded on their next possession when Bonner found Burley for a seven-yard touchdown.
L.A. settled for a 28-yard Remy Hamilton field goal to regain the lead at the end of the first quarter. Hamilton is now 28-of-35 on field goals this season after he missed a 56-yarder right before halftime.
The Avengers went on to extend their lead to 38-20, midway through the third quarter, after FB/LB Lonnie Ford crashed over the goal line from a yard out to scored his ninth rushing touchdown of the year.
But the Rattlers came storming back. After Bonner scored on a one-yard run, former Avenger lineman Vince Amey sacked Kaleo in his own end zone for a safety, trimming L.A.'s lead to 38-29. Then, after fielding the ensuing kickoff, Bonner then found Jerald Brown for a 33-yard touchdown, making it 38-36.
Locke's third touchdown of the game gave L.A. some breathing room early in the fourth quarter, but not for long since Bonner found Gatewood for a 16-yard touchdown soon afterward. A missed extra point kept the Avenger lead at 45-42.
The Avenger offense then uncharacteristically turned the ball over to Arizona, which the Rattlers converted into a two-yard touchdown run by Burley, which gave Arizona its first lead since it led, 14-10, early in the second quarter.
Locke's fourth touchdown put L.A, back on top with just over five minutes remaining. However, with 38 seconds left, Bonner found Gatewood again to make it 56-52 in favor of the visitors.
