Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current, SK - The Swift Current Broncos announced on Tuesday afternoon that the Arizona Coyotes have signed Broncos' forward Tyler Steenbergen to a three-year entry-level contract.
This season, Steenbergen has led the charge for a Swift Current Broncos team that currently owns the WHL's second best record, staying atop the overall standings throughout the season. In 51 games, Steenbergen has 98 points (44g-54a) and a plus-52 rating. Of his 44 goals, nine of them came via the power play, one shorthanded and seven game winners.
"Tyler has had an outstanding season for us in Swift Current," said Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Manny Viveiros. "We've been very impressed with his ability to display his offensive skill set on a nightly basis, but also in making plays defensively. We're excited to see him continue his development as a player and his role as a leader for our hockey club as we gear towards the playoffs."
The 20-year-old product of Sylvan Lake, AB was named the WHL's Player of the Month in September/October and passed the 40-goal plateau for the second straight season.
Listed at 5'10", 182 lbs, Steenbergen has spent his entire WHL career with the Broncos. He was originally drafted by Swift Current in the first round, 12th overall in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. For his career, he's played in 262 contests, totalling 245 points (120g-125a) and a plus-53 rating.
Steenbergen also suited up for Team WHL at the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series and for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in Buffalo, New York in which he's best known for scoring the gold medal winning goal against Sweden in the Championship game.
Steenbergen joins the same NHL club as former Bronco Lane Pederson who signed with the Coyotes last season as a free agent.
The Broncos are back in action on Wednesday, March 7th at 7:00pm CT looking to climb the ranks in the WHL's East Division race when they clash against the Calgary Hitmen at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex.
