Toronto Argonauts News Release
The Argos added another young Canadian talent to the roster today with the signing of free-agent OL Shawn Gifford. As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 6'5", 280-pound Ottawa native signs with the "Double Blue" after spending the past two seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Gifford was originally drafted by the Montreal Alouettes in the 4th round (25th overall) of the 2001 CFL Canadian College Draft out of Charleston Southern University where he played four seasons before being acquired by Saskatchewan in a trade in September, 2001.
"Shawn is a big, strong young man who can really help us in both the running and passing game," said Argos head coach Michael "Pinball" Clemons. "We're very happy about being able to add Shawn to our team.
The 25-year old Gifford will join the Argos for the start of training camp, which will open in May at their University of Toronto at Mississauga training facility at Erindale Campus.
The Toronto Argonauts, North America's oldest professional football team, celebrate their 130th anniversary in 2003 with 14 Grey Cup championships to their credit, the most in Canadian Football League history. For Argo ticket information call (416) 545-1777.
