Toronto Argonauts News Release
Toronto - The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is proud to announce that it is the first ever professional sports organization to be placed on the Ontario Ministry of Education's Registry of Programs with its Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program.
The Huddle Up program showcases athletes as leaders in the community to encourage students to work together to solve the bullying problem. The Argos players empower youth to take proactive measures and prevent bullying in their schools and community. The program has reached almost a quarter-million students and has become one of the most sought-after initiatives of its kind in the GTA. Entering its seventh year, the Huddle Up program will visit over 60 schools in 2008/2009.
"We are thankful that the Ontario Ministry of Education has added 'Huddle Up' to its Registry of Programs. It is another step in preventing violence in our community," commented Jason Colero, Manager, Community Relations, Toronto Argonauts. "It's wonderful that the players can empower the youth of our community to take a stand against bullying."
Colero, who has run the program since its inception in 2001, has received recognition and accolades for his work with the Huddle Up program including the Canadian Safe School Network President's Award for outstanding service in the promotion of safe schools in Canada, the CSI/Cave Community Builder's Award and membership in the Toronto Chapter for the National Coalition for Bullying Awareness.
Stu Auty, President, Canadian Safe School Network, remarked, "The 'Huddle Up' program offers a powerful anti-bullying message to students. The Canadian Safe School Network is happy to have assisted in the development and ongoing operation of the program, which is now listed on the Ontario Ministry of Education Registry of Programs. Two thumbs up to Jason Colero and the Argos players for their wonderful contribution to our community."
The Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program, presented by Tim Hortons, is a three-part interactive program. Huddle Up representatives first meet with student leaders to develop initiatives to prevent bullying in the school. The second element is a student body assembly in which an Argonauts player will use personal stories to relate to different forms of bullying, why people bully, and how bystanders can help other students. The third part is a Student Summit where the student leaders come together and share their ideas with players, cheerleaders and other student leaders from other GTA schools.
