Toronto Argonauts News Release
TORONTO - The Toronto Argonauts play host to the rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats Friday night at BMO Field in what will be the biggest home game the Argos have played since hosting (and winning) the East Final in 2017. What is on the line? A chance to clinch first place in the East Division, a first-round playoff bye and starting 6-0 at home for the first time since 1997.
BMO Field is the place to be Friday night for an epic East Division showdown between two long-time rivals with significant playoff implications on the line. The division-leading Argos (8-4) welcome second-place Hamilton (7-5) to Toronto for the second time this season in what will be the fourth meeting between the two teams in 2021. Hamilton won chapter one of the rivalry on Labour Day followed by back-to-back wins for the Boatmen (Sept. 10 and Oct. 11), including Toronto's first win in Hamilton since 2017. Both teams have already clinched spots in the 2021 CFL playoffs but a coveted first-round bye directly into the East Final is at stake Friday night at 7:30 p.m. A win Friday night also returns the Harold E. Ballard Trophy back to Toronto for the first time since 2017, awarded to the season series winner between the two clubs.
The Double Blue last finished atop the East in 2017 after a 9-9 regular season, which preceded a final minute win in the East Final vs. Saskatchewan and a snowy, thrilling victory in the 105th Grey Cup against Calgary. The team that finished first in the East after the regular season has made the Grey Cup each season sine 2014.
The Argos are riding a seven-game home winning streak at BMO Field dating back to the 2019 season, including five straight wins in 2021. It's been 24 years since the 17-time Grey Cup champs have achieved that feat. Toronto's defence has been dominant early in 2021 home games, allowing only ten points total in five opening quarters at BMO. With one home game remaining against Edmonton (Nov. 16) following this clash, the Argos hope to continue playing in front of the Double Blue faithful in the playoffs.
