Toronto Argonauts News Release
Toronto - The Toronto Argonauts Football Club and Tim Hortons are proud to bring back the Argo Recess program for a second year. In an effort to show primary school students that exercise is not only good for their health but fun as well, Argo Recess engages youth in football, sports and physical activity through a unique recess experience with Argos Players and Cheerleaders, as well as Jason the Argos mascot. During an extended 25 minute recess, Argos Players will interact with the students, getting them involved in drills and inflatable skill zones, providing students the opportunity to achieve their daily physical activity requirement.
Over 10,000 students will participate in an Argo Recess this year in schools chosen through recommendations by the TDSB and TCDSB. New for 2009 is an interactive portion called Argocise that teaches students exercises that can be used in their daily lives including yoga, calesthenics and pre-game warm ups. Students and teachers can then download the instructions, as well as healthy eating tips, off of the Argos website at argonauts.ca for future use in the schools.
Commented Argos Community Relations Manager Jason Colero, "As we all know, lack of sufficient exercise has proven to have an adverse effect on children's ability to learn. It is our goal through Argo Recess to show students, with the help of our players and cheerleaders, that sports and physical activity is another option to have fun with your friends and do something good for yourself at the same time. It is another way for the Toronto Argonauts to give back to the community that supports us."
Joseph Sestito, Vice Principal, St. Thomas More, Mississauga, remarked, "Argo Recess was an interactive, highly energetic way of communicating to students the importance of fostering friendships and staying active. Students from grades 1 to 8 were engaged and enjoyed the time and energy put in from the Argos."
