Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Threshers were limited to four hits in a game that featured a two-hour rain delay, as Clearwater suffered a 4-0 loss to the Jupiter Hammerheads on Sunday afternoon.
Victor Arano provided a bright spot on a cloudy Sunday, retiring all six men he faced in relief, including two strikeouts. The 21-year-old righty rushed his fastball up to 97 mph and threw 20 of his 26 pitches for strikes.
The Threshers (32-23) are now 3.5 games back of the Tampa Yankees for first place in the FSL North, with 14 left to play in the first half.
Thomas Eshelman worked around a single and a double to open the ballgame, striking out the side to keep Jupiter (28-29) off the board in the first.
After Jeff Brigham took the field to begin his warmup tosses in the bottom half, the rain intensified and forced a two hour and eight minute rain delay before the Threshers saw their first at-bat.
Tim Berry (1-0) took the hill upon resumption, and limited Clearwater to two hits and a walk across his four scoreless innings.
For the third-straight day, it was Dexter Kjerstad who got his team on the board first.
Kjerstad turned on a 1-0 pitch from Will Morris (2-2) and lined a solo homer to left for his third long ball in as many days, giving the Hammerheads the edge in the third inning.
Two innings later, Kjerstad struck again. This time with a man at first and one down, he ripped the first offering from Morris beyond the bullpens in left for his fourth home run of the series, and eighth of the season, giving Jupiter a 3-0 lead.
The Threshers best chance of the day came in the seventh inning.
A one-out error on shortstop Rehiner Cordova allowed Mitch Walding to reach, and Carlos Tocci followed with a bloop single to left to bring the tying run to the plate in Kyle Martin. Reliever Scott Lyman fell behind Martin 3-0, but came back to run the count full and induced a liner to center for the second out. Lyman then got Numata on a grounder to short to end the threat.
Matt Imhof worked the eighth and ninth innings in relief for his first career appearance out of the bullpen. He permitted a run on Cordova's RBI single in the ninth, giving Jupiter the 4-0 lead.
Clearwater and Jupiter will meet for the series finale on Monday, as Yacksel Rios (1-0) is scheduled to take the hill against lefty Dillon Peters (4-3). The game can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.
