St. Lucie Mets News Release
VIERA, Fla. - St. Lucie pitchers Kevin McGowan and Paul Paez combined to toss a three-hit shutout as the Mets blanked the Brevard County Manatees 7-0 on Sunday at Space Coast Stadium.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Mets and vaulted them from last place to fourth place in the FSL South.
Travis d'Arnaud, the injured New York Mets catcher, made a rehab appearance and went 1 for 5 with a RBI single at the DH.
McGowan pitched five no-hit innings. He walked Johnny Davis to lead off the fourth but Angel Ortega followed by lining into a double play. McGowan struck out three and faced the minimum in five innings. He threw 60 pitches in the spot start and lowered his season ERA to 0.82. It was his first win.
Paez pitched the final four innings to record the save. He gave up a single on his first pitch of the sixth to George Iskenderian, but Gregory McCall lined into a double play.
McCall led of the ninth with a double and went to third on a wild pitch. Paez kept the shutout in tact by getting a ground ball comebacker and striking out the last two batters. Paez has not allowed an earned run in 14.1 innings this season.
On offense the Mets scored in five separate innings. A two-out single by d'Arnaud in the third got the scoring started.
The Mets plated three in the fourth inning. They loaded the bases with no outs and Jhoan Urena brought in a run with a ground out to first. Dustin DeMuth's throwing error home let Michael Katz score from second. Luis Guillorme knocked a RBI double to make it 4-0.
Patrick Biondi hit a pair of two-out RBI singles in the sixth and eighth innings. Urena hit a RBI sac fly in the ninth to make it 7-0.
Guillorme led the way at the plate, going 3 for 5. Biondi and Kevin Taylor went 2 for 4.
Next Up: The Mets (27-29, 4th) and Manatees (20-36) conclude their four-game series on Monday at Space Coast Stadium. The Mets are aiming for the split. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
