FORT MYERS, Fla. - A quartet of Daytona Tortugas pitchers combined to toss a one-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Ismael Guillon made a spot start for the Tortugas and tossed four innings without allowing a hit while issuing four walks with three strikeouts. Jimmy Moran took over in the fifth and hurled three more frames of no-hit baseball. Nick Howard entered for the eighth and struck out two in a perfect inning.
Carrying a no-hitter into the bottom of the ninth, Daytona went to reliever Brennan Bernardino. On a 1-0 pitch, Tanner Witt erased the no-hit bid with a solid single to right field; the only hit of the game for the Miracle lineup.
Making his debut in the Florida State League, Miracle starter Randy LeBlanc surrendered a lead-off homer to Taylor Sparks to begin the top of the second. On a 1-0 pitch, Sparks lifted a high drive beyond the wall in left center for a solo shot, 1-0. The home run was the first allowed by LeBlanc (0-1) this season after going 61 innings in Cedar Rapids without giving up a long ball.
The Tortugas put up three more runs against LeBlanc in the top of the fifth. With one out and Angelo Gumbs at first base, Sparks was struck with a 1-0 breaking ball. Two pitches later, Brian O'Grady roped a two-run double into the right field corner. Gumbs and Sparks scored. Ronald Bueno added an RBI triple with a drive to right center field, 4-0.
Moran (1-0) picked up the win for Daytona.
The Miracle (27-30) wrap up a seven-game homestand in the series finale with Daytona (27-30) on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Gates to the ballpark open at 6 p.m. For tickets and information, call the Miracle offices at (239) 768-4210 or visit www.miraclebaseball.com.
