EVERETT, WASH. - Yung Chi Chen went 3 for 3 with two runs scored as the Everett AquaSox shutout the Everett Merchants, 3-0 in the quest for the first-ever Everett Cup Wednesday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Chen played for the Taiwan team that qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics, tripled, stole a base and scored twice for the AquaSox.
The Merchants, a semi-pro team in the Pacific International League, held the AquaSox scoreless until the fourth inning when Chen scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Bryan LaHair.
AquaSox pitchers struck out 11 Merchants; Sox starter Ruben Flores was responsible for five of those punchouts in four innings of work.
The Merchants' center fielder, Nick Benton, was 1 for 3 with a double.
The AquaSox 2004 Northwest League season-opening series begins Friday night at 7:05 against the visiting Vancouver Canadians; the contest will be followed by a fireworks spectacular. The Canadians are in town Saturday at 7:05 and Sunday at 4:05 pm.
