EVERETT, Wash.- The Everett AquaSox (35-33) received a strong pitching performance from Jon Hesketh Saturday night as he held the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (43-25) hitless through five innings. However, the Volcanoes would come back in the ninth to steal the 4-3 victory.

The AquaSox jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Matt Cerione led off with a walk before going to second when Jose Rivero laid down a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Gerardo Avila extended his league leading home run total to 13 when he blasted a Wilber Bucardo fastball deep to left field to give the AquaSox a 2-0 lead.

The AquaSox used the long ball again in the bottom of the second to extend the lead. With one out, Ben Billingsley hit a solo shot to right field to make the score 3-0.

The Volcanoes would get their first hit off of Hesketh in the top of the sixth. Evan Crawford led off with a single. Dan Cook laid down a sac bunt and was safe at first on a throwing error by Mario Martinez, sending Crawford to third on the play. Crawford would come into score on a sac fly from Drew Biery to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Volcanoes roared back in the top of the ninth against AquaSox closer Chad Cordero (L, 0-2). Luke Anders led off with a single before Ryan Cavan added a two-run homer to tie the game. Juan Martinez then came up with one out and hit an inside-the-park home run to give Salem-Keizer the lead and a 4-3 victory.

Hesketh pitched five innings, allowing just one unearned run on one hit, while striking out nine and walking two in the no-decision.

The AquaSox and Volcanoes will return for game two of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Chris Kirkland (3-5, 5.01 ERA) will get the start for the AquaSox. Kirkland will be opposed by Salem-Keizer's Chris Gloor (6-1, 2.45 ERA).
