Everett AquaSox News Release

EVERETT, Wash. - In the Eighth Annual Everett Cup, the Everett AquaSox claimed their sixth victory all-time in the series by a score of 10-5, behind a six-run offensive explosion in the third inning that settled the Frogs down after a shaky start in the field.

The game started off looking like it was shaping up to be a repeat of last year's loss to the in-town rival with the Merchants scoring a run in each of the first three innings, none of them earned, caused by four errors made by three AquaSox fielders. Left-fielder James Wood drove in the first run of the season for the AquaSox in the bottom of the first inning with a double that scored right-fielder Mario Yepez from third base, but after two and a half innings, the Merchants led 3-1.

The AquaSox offense came alive in a big way in the bottom of the third inning after the Merchants replaced starting pitcher Ricky Holm, who held the AquaSox to only one hit in Wood's double through two innings of work. Enter new pitcher Matt Cooper, who after retiring his first batter with a strikeout allowed the next seven AquaSox batters to reach base. Ten Frogs came to the plate in the inning, and drove in a total of six runs to swing the score to 7-3.

After the big inning for the AquaSox bats, the pitching staff took over and allowed minimal damage with the game's momentum clearly swung in the Frogs favor win with nine unanswered runs and a score of 10-3. Right-hander Jason Buursma, who was pitching in AAA for the St. Louis Cardinals Organization less than a month ago, came in to relieve starter Bennett Whitmore and tossed two scoreless innings giving up only a hit and a walk to collect the first pitching win of the 2011 season.

The AquaSox will begin the 2011 season June 17 on the road versus Tri-City. The home opener is set for Wednesday, June 22 at Everett Memorial Stadium against Vancouver. For information about ticket plans, planning a group outing or about the season schedule, the public is invited to visit the AquaSox stadium store at 3802 Broadway in Everett, call (425) 258-3673, or log onto aquasox.com.
