Yakima Bears Announce 2011 Roster

June 16, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears have received the remaining player names to complete the roster provided by the Arizona Diamondbacks that will serve as the opening day roster on June 17 when the Bears start the season with a road game against the Vancouver Canadians.

One more returning player has been added in Brad Wilson (2009-2010), which brings the total number of returning to nine. Wilson has pitched in AA and AAA and will be the starter on opening day.

Some of the newly drafted players are from, or attended college, in this region of the country as well. Pitcher Mike Blake was born and raised in Vancouver, Washington and second baseman Danny Pulfer attended the University of Oregon.

The Bears also have a pair of Pac-10 catchers from the 2011 draft in Stanford's Zach Jones (24th round) and UCLA's Steve Rodriguez (15th round).

There are eight players on the roster who were born outside the United States, but only three of those are from spanish-speaking countries. The international players hail from Canada (3), Dominican Republic (2), Colombia (1), Australia (1), and South Korea (1).

In all there are 23 players on the roster for the Yakima Bears. There are only two left-handed hitters among the 12 position players (3 catchers, 5 infielders, 4 outfielders), but the pitching staff includes four lefty hurlers.

After starting the season with five games in Vancouver, British Columbia, the home opener for the Yakima Bears is Wednesday June 22nd and will be followed by five more games during the first homestand.

Season tickets and mini plans are on sale now at the downtown Bears office at 17 N. 3rd Street, Suite 101 and online at yakimabears.com.
