Ray Winder Field, Little Rock, AR - Last week USA Baseball announced the 24-man roster that will compete in the upcoming 2005 CONCEBE Olympic Regional Qualifying Tournament. The Arkansas Travelers and their affiliate, the Los Angeles Angels are well represented on Team USA as five former, current or future Travs will don the red, while and blue. Members of the 2005 Travs playing for Team USA are RHP Jered Weaver and 2B Howie Kendrick. C Jeff Mathis and RHP Stephen Andrade, who both spent time with the 2003-2004 Travelers, were also named to the American squad. SS Brandon Wood, expected to start next season for the Travelers, is the second youngest (20) Team USA member after a stellar 2004 season with Rancho Cucamonga.
Team USA's roster is made up of professional non 25-man roster players of the 30 Major League Baseball organizations. The qualifying tournament will take place November 15-19 at three spring training ballparks in Phoenix, Arizona. Six countries from North and Central America are slated to compete in Arizona, with the top four finishers advancing to the Americas Olympic Qualifier in Havana, Cuba, in August, 2006. In that event, the four teams representing CONCEBE will compete against the top four regional qualifiers from both the Caribbean and South American regions for two bids to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. The third and fourth place finishers in Cuba will advance to a secondary Olympic qualifying event to be held sometime in 2007.
The six countries that will compete in Arizona are: Canada, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and the United States. Games will be played each day from November 15-19, with three games taking place simultaneously starting at 1:05 pm local time (3:05 pm ET) at three different Cactus League ballparks: Maryvale Ballpark, Mesa's HoHoKam Park, and Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
