Springfield Cardinals News Release
After months of speculation, it became official today, as Chris Carpenter is the 2005 winner of the National League's Cy Young Award. With the announcement, Carpenter becomes only the second Cardinal to win the award and first since 1970 when Bob Gibson took home the honor.
Carpenter finished the season with a 21-5 record and a 2.83 ERA. His 21 wins were second only to Marlins lefty Dontrelle Willis for most in the majors. In 241.2 innings, Carpenter struck out 213 batters with only 51 walks. The 30-year old right-hander also threw seven complete games and four shutouts.
In a stretch that started in June, Carpenter went unbeaten at 13-0 in 16 starts. He made 17 straight starts that resulted in a Cardinals win and 18 in a row where he wasn't charged with a loss. He also had 10 consecutive road victories, the first NL player to do so since Gibson won 12 in 1970.
In the playoffs, Carpenter went 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in three starts; however, the voting by the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) is conducted at the end of the regular season and excludes the playoffs.
The New Hampshire native received 132 points in the closest vote since 1998. He received 19 first-place votes, 12 second-place votes, and one third-place vote out of the 32 total ballots submitted by the BBWAA. Willis finished second with 112 points and 11 first-place votes. Roger Clemens of Houston was a distant third with 40 points.
This is the third award for Carpenter this season, as he recently won NL Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News as well as the Players Choice Award for Outstanding Pitcher.
Earlier in the week, Bartolo Colon of the Los Angeles Angles won the American League Cy Young Award. The American League MVP will be announced on Monday followed with the National League MVP announcement on Tuesday.
