Angel City Football Club's Quotes Ahead of Home Match against Chicago Red Stars

LOS ANGELES - Angel City Football Club (ACFC) prepared this week to face the Chicago Red Stars at BMO Stadium on Sunday, September 1. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. PT/4:00 p.m. ET. The match will air nationally on CBS, stream live on Paramount+ (with a local live CBS Station access) and internationally on NWSL+.

Below please find the match preview and quotes from the club's Head Coach Becki Tweed and Team Captain and defender Sarah Gorden:

On her journey of stepping up as the team captain:

"This has been a year of learning for me both on-and-off the field as a captain, as a player, and as a teammate. Ali has been in and out with the squad with the World Cup and her injury. I've had to step into a bigger role as the vice captain and I've learned a lot of things."

"I am really grateful for having such an incredible group. I feel like they've been really patient with me as I've learned to step up, find my voice as a captain and demand more of the team when we need it. Also, be there as a shoulder to lean on when my teammates need it as well."

"It's been a stressful year at times as you can see with some of our results earlier in the year. But I think our group is in a really good place. We took the summer, as we've said 1,000 times, to enjoy each other and enjoy the game again. I think we're building off of that and we really like where we're at right now."

On the team's confidence to make a playoff run, knowing they've done it before:

"This is a very different group than last year, but a lot of us are still here. What we did on that run at the end of the season last year is more of a mentality than anything else."

"It's a mentality that you get the job done and you do whatever you have to do to get the job done, it's not ugly but it gets the job done."

"We know what we're capable of and what we can do, and we've done it before. It brings you confidence, knowing that it's possible and it's also an expectation. It's a different level that we know that we can reach."

"So, it's definitely on our minds and in our hearts and that's what we plan to do."

On her son Caiden leading three clap along with the other ACFC kids:

"I'm very excited that the kids get to lead the three clap. Caiden was nervous and did not want to do it, but I am forcing him to. I think he will be happy that he did it in the long run. It will be very cute."

On the club's performance in San Diego last weekend:

"We dominated the game. We were comfortable in possession, especially in the first half and it allowed us to create opportunities. We defended brilliantly, limited their chances in the box compared to our last game against them. We also created opportunities in the final third with patience and good football. We allowed plays to develop, and we looked comfortable in possession"

On Midfielder Kennedy Fuller's growth this season:

"You forget how young she is. It's great to see her continue to grow each game. We're starting to see her personality come out on the field now. She can be so dynamic when she gets the ball faced forward, running at back lines. She knows that she has to continue to build relationships to get that final pass nailed, and that will get her more assists and keep her productive in the attacking third."

"She has started to come into her own. She's so comfortable on the ball, doesn't mind getting the ball under pressure and wants to get faced up and cause problems."

On the club's upcoming match against Chicago:

"They have exposed teams in transition and have a player in Mal [Swanson] that can create something out of nothing. She's a player that can score goals when you think she doesn't have a chance. She has a special talent, and we have to be aware and mindful that even if we have the ball, we need to know where she is going to pick it up if we do give the ball away so that we can stop that transition."

"A space we can expose them is beyond their back line. We have pace in our front line that can get in beyond most back lines in this league if we are patient and find the right time to manipulate to get in beyond. We'll be looking to expose that space and get in as many opportunities as we can to create chances in the box."
