Anderson Pitches Barnstormers To Series Win
John Anderson worked five shutout innings on Sunday evening as the Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the New Britain Bees, 4-2, in the rubber game of a three-game series at New Britain Stadium.
The win stretches the Barnstormers lead in the wild card race to six games over the Bees with five weeks remaining on the schedule.
Anderson (3-2) allowed two hits and three walks in his five-inning stint while striking out six. The left-hander stared down his biggest challenge in the first inning. Darren Ford led off with an infield single behind second base, and Deibinson Romero picked up a walk. Anderson struck out Jason Rogers, but the third strike was wild and allowed the runners to move to second and third. The former Blue Jays farmhand was able to bear down, striking out Matt Tuiasosopo for the second out and getting Jovan Rosa on a harmless grounder to third to end the threat.
Beyond that, Anderson allowed two walks in the fourth inning and a double to Vicente Conde in the fifth.
Lancaster, meanwhile, made a night out of productive outs against Kyle Simon (7-6). Vladimir Frias gave his club a 1-0 lead in the second with a sacrifice fly that scored K.C. Hobson, who had singled and gone to third on aTrayvon Robinson double. Hobson took his turn with a sacrifice fly in the fourth that followed singles by Blake Gailen and Jimmy Paredes. Josh Bell made it 3-0 with an RBI force play grounder in the fifth. Paredes added an RBI single later that inning. Bell was thrown out at the plate trying to score a second run, and the Barnstormers never threatened again.
New Britain scored an unearned run off Kevin Munson in the eighth, and Conde connected for his first Atlantic League home run against Matt Reynolds in the ninth. Reynolds retired the final two batters with his own defensive work for his 21st save.
The Barnstormers open a three-game series against the Road Warriors on Monday evening. Joe Gardner (3-8) will make the start against lefty Andres Caceres (2-1). Fans may tune into BRC-11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel for what will be Lancaster's final Monday home game of the season.
NOTES: Gailen extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 2-for-4...Paredes is 8-for-15 in the last four games...Anderson is 3-1 as a starter...The Barnstormers are 5-1 at New Britain Stadium this season but only 2-7 against the Bees at home...Lancaster has won nine of its last 13 games.
