Barnstormers Claim Another Road Series Victory From Bees
(New Britain, CT) - The Lancaster Barnstormers (15-14, 53-39) defeated the New Britain Bees (15-16, 48-46) 4-2 at New Britain Stadium on Sunday evening in the rubber game of a three-game weekend series in the Hardware City. The first pitch of the ballgame was delayed by thirty minutes due to rain.
New Britain starting pitcher Kyle Simon (7-6) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on seven hits in five innings pitched while striking out four and hitting a batter. Lancaster starting pitcher John Anderson (3-2) picked up the win, firing five scoreless innings on just two hits allowed, walking three and striking out six with one wild pitch thrown. Matt Reynolds shut the door in the bottom half of the ninth inning for his 21st save of the season and second in as many nights.
Lancaster took a 1-0 lead versus Simon in the top of the second by way of a sacrifice fly off the bat of Vladimir Frias that scored K.C. Hobson after he singled with one man down earlier in the frame. The sacrifice fly came into effect once again in the top of the fourth when Hobson allowed Blake Gailen to cross the plate after Gailen reached base with a leadoff base knock. The visitors added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth for a 4-0 cushion, highlighted by a two-out run-scoring base hit from Jimmy Paredes as the Barnstormers enjoyed their largest lead of the contest. After Simon was lifted in the top of the sixth, the New Britain bullpen trio of Chris Reed, Sammy Gervacio, and Elvin Ramirez did a fantastic job keeping New Britain within striking distance as they combined to toss four scoreless innings, striking out four in the process. The Bees were finally able to crack the scoreboard in the home half of the eighth and get to within 4-1 when Jovan Rosa parachuted an opposite-field RBI double down the right field line that scored Jason Rogers after he reached base on an error committed by Paredes at third base to open up the inning. In the bottom of the ninth Vince Conde cracked a one out solo home run to left against Reynolds to cut the deficit to 4-2, his first big fly in a Hardware City uniform and second extra-base hit of the night after tallying a double into the left field corner in the bottom of the fifth. New Britain would get no closer on a frustrating night offensively as Reynolds erased the next two batters to give Lancaster the series win. Rosa and Conde each had a pair of hits in defeat.
