Anderson Earns Its Second Shutout Of The Year

June 15, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release

One night after pitching meltdowns, inconsistent offense and three errors led to an Anderson loss, the Joes bounced back with superb pitching, explosive bats and solid defense to beat the Charlotte County Redfish, 7-0 in front of 1,397 at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

Behind the stellar efforts of starter Jean Granado, Anderson (6-19) earned its second shutout of the year in ending a four-game losing streak. Granado offered the best performance of any Joes pitcher yet this season, allowing no runs and four hits across seven innings. He walked two and matched his personal best for strikeouts in a game with nine. Dave Whitfield and Brandon Sheriff threw a scoreless and hitless inning each in relief to complete the three-man shutout.

Charlotte County (5-20) had the first chance to score in the game, when Brian Jarosinski singled to right field in the second inning. Rounding third base came Redfish catch William Plaza, but Joes rightfielder Billy Hogan threw Plaza out at the plate to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.

"It was just like I threw it and a little angel directed it right to home and it worked out," Hogan said.

Whether through heavenly influence or not, Hogan also excelled at the plate, going 3-for-4, including a three-run home run and a triple. It was Hogan's fourth long ball and first triple of the year. Heath Keel also hit a home run for the Joes, sending a solo shot clear over the straightaway center field fence in the fifth inning for his fifth homer of the season.

Granado improved to 3-1 on the year with the win, while Redfish starter Reynaldo Correal dropped to 0-4 with the loss.

Between Granado on the hill and Hogan at the plate, Anderson stole the show and set up a rubber match between the two teams for the second weekend in a row. With the series tied one-one when Anderson and Charlotte County met on June 9, the Joes won, 5-3.

Anderson returns to action Saturday night at 7:05, when Kevin Culpepper (0-1) is slated to pitch for the Joes against Alex Fernandez (0-2) of the 'Fish.

Anderson asks all their fans to come out for a special event Saturday. The Joes will host "Pink in the Park Day," with one-time-only pink jerseys worn by the Joes players, autographed and auctioned off after the game with proceeds to benefit the Cancer Association of Anderson. See the accompanying story on www.andersonjoes.com for full information on the event.
