Peanuts Have Hitting Breakout

June 15, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release

The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, had an offensive breakout on Friday beating the Macon Music 15-2. The Peanuts hit two home runs as part of a season-high 18 hit barrage on the Music. Shannon Wirth got his fifth win of the year making him the first pitcher in the South Coast League to win five games

South Georgia got things going once again in the first inning scoring two runs. It was looking like it would be a close game when Macon responded in the top of the third with two runs of their own. South Georgia then responded in spectacular fashion.

In the bottom of the third inning, South Georgia brought 14 batters to plate and scored nine runs. In the third inning alone, Steve Garrabrants scored two runs on a walk and a single. Not to be outdone, Doc Brooks doubled and hit a three-run home run in the frame. South Georgia did score three more runs in the fifth inning off a Garrabrants two-run homerun.

The offensive output might have shadowed the performance from starting pitcher Shannon Wirth. Wirth won his fifth game of the season making him the only pitcher in the South Coast League to have five wins on the season. Wirth pitched seven innings allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Drew Shetrone made his Peanuts debut pitching one perfect inning. Josh Cowles wrapped things up with a perfect inning of his own.

Brooks had a season-high five RBI on the night. Steve Garrabrants was 3-3 with three runs and three RBI. Joey Hooft went 3-3 with three runs and two RBI. Even Wirth got into the action at the plate going 2-4 with a three-run triple. The offensive output was all done without manager Wally Backman, who is currently serving a three-game suspension stemming from a recent altercation with an umpire.

South Georgia will goes for the series win on Saturday night. Dustin Taylor will get the start. First pitch is set for 7:10. The game can be heard on "1450 The Fan" and online at southgeorgiapeanuts.com. Tickets are still available at southgeorgiapeanuts.com
