Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Americans forward and Greece, N.Y., native Derek Whitmore will participate in a ceremonial puck drop prior to the Section V High School hockey game between the Greece Lightning and Webster Schroeder Warriors on Thursday, Jan. 12 at Lakeshore Hockey Arena. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
Whitmore, who played two seasons for the Greece Lightning from 1999 to 2001 and helped the team to a Sectional title, currently leads the Amerks with 15 goals and 24 points in 35 games. Earlier this season, Whitmore was named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 27 and earned the ReGen/AHL Performance of the Month Award for November after scoring four goals in Rochester's 5-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Nov. 26. The game featured the first career hat trick for Whitmore, who also became the first Amerks player to score at least four goals in one game since Jason Pominville scored five times on Oct. 21, 2005.
The 27-year-old is now in his fifth AHL season and his second stint with the Amerks after beginning his professional career in his hometown by appearing in eight games at the end of the 2007-08 campaign. Whitmore made his National Hockey League debut with the Buffalo Sabres this season when he skated for the Sabres against the Ottawa Senators on Dec. 20, then played for Buffalo again two nights later versus the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 278 career AHL games, Whitmore has recorded 128 points on 72 goals and 56 assists. Prior to his professional career, Whitmore played four seasons of collegiate hockey at Bowling Green State University, where he registered 70 goals and 32 assists in 143 games.
In addition to dropping the ceremonial first puck, Whitmore will also be available to sign autographs in the lobby at Lakeshore during the second intermission.
