Abbotsford Heat News Release
Omaha, NE - The Rochester Americans twice fought back from deficits and then beat the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights in a shootout, winning 4-3 on Tuesday night at the Civic Auditorium. It was the second setback for the Knights in their five-game home stand.
The Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 50 seconds into the game when Dave Moss raced down the right wing and blew a shot past goalie Michael Leighton.
The Knights doubled their lead later in the period. While on a five-on-three, Mark Giordano stepped down the slot, took a pass from Craig MacDonald and beat Leighton with a shot over his right shoulder to make it 2-0 after one.
The Americans came back with goals in the first five minutes of the second period from Jiri Novotny (powerplay) and Jeff Jillson to make it 2-2. But with just eight seconds remaining in the period, Moss scooped up the rebound of a shot by Giordano and beat Leighton from a sharp angle to give the Knights the 3-2 lead after two.
The Amerks again tied the game, this time during a delayed penalty. Mark Mancari steered a pass from Nathan Paetsch over Curtis McElhinney to make it 3-3.
The game went to the shootout, and the Knights would take a 1-0 lead after two rounds on a goal by Giordano. But Clarke MacArthur tied the shootout in round five, and Kamil Kreps then won it in the eighth round. McElhinney finished with 27 saves.
The Knights are now 27-25-2-8. They return to action on Saturday when they face the Cleveland Barons at 7:00 p.m. The first 500 fans to the game will receive a free Miller Lite t-shirt. On Sunday, the Knights finish the home stand against the Houston Aeros at 5:00 p.m.
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday from noon through game time and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
