Houston Aeros News Release
Seven things you need to know
- The Aeros enter tonight's game with 87 points - just five points off last season's total, and a magic number for clinching a playoff spot of 13 points. That's a combination of points won by the Aeros, and points lost by Iowa. The Stars can reach 99 points by winning their remaining 19 games. Houston holds a two-point lead (87-85) over second-place Milwaukee, which plays host to Peoria tonight. The Aeros do have two games in hand.
- Murphy's Mission, benefiting I Have a Dream ®, started off in strong fashion last week when D Curtis Murphy picked up a combined four assists for $400. An anonymous local donor is giving $300 per Murphy goal and $100 per assist to the charity. The "I Have a Dream"® Program helps children from low-income areas reach their education and career goals by providing a long-term program of mentoring, tutoring, and enrichment with an assured opportunity for higher education. A home hat trick at any point of the program will net the foundation a whopping $10,000. Murphy, who last month became the top defenseman goal and point scorer in team history, is set to complete the scoring trio with his next assist. His 109 helpers with the Aeros are tied with Greg Hawgood for the top spot on the team's ledgers. Murphy ranks second among AHL blueliners with 53 points (10-43=53), and his assist total ties his career-high. Murphy has six points (1-5=6) in a four-game point streak - one off his season-high - and is averaging more than a point per game since New Year's. Murphy has 27 points (7-20=27) in 26 games in 2006.
- Aeros RW Kirby Law (34-51=85) leads C Erik Westrum (29-55=84) for the top spot in the AHL's points race. They and are trying to become the first duo from the same team to finish 1-2 in the league's scoring race since Paul Gardner (112 points) and Jody Gage (99) turned the trick for Rochester exactly 20 seasons ago - in 1985-86. No two teammates have reached the 100-point plateau since a trio of Carolina Monarchs did it in 1995-96. LW Patrick O'Sullivan is first in rookie scoring and eighth overall with 68 points (36-32=68). O'Sullivan has team rookie records in goals and points, and is tied with Cory Larose's team record assist total for a first-year player. LW Roman Voloshenko (27-17=44) is tied for second among first-year players in goals and ninth in points.
- Houston LW Patrick O'Sullivan continues his push towards a possible Rookie of the Year title. O'Sullivan, who last week became the first player ever to win back-to-back AHL Rookie of the Month Awards, leads all rookies in goals (36) and points (68). His 36 goals place him third in the AHL. Many rookies go through peaks and valleys, but O'Sullivan has been the exception. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native hasn't gone back-to-back games without a point since 11/6 and 11/9. Since that point, O'Sullivan has racked up 61 points (33-28=61) in just 45 games. O'Sullivan has points in nine of his last 10 games, with 14 points (8-6=14) in that span. O'Sullivan has an eye-popping 17 goals in the last 20 games. He has two of Houston's three goals in the last two games, both coming on the power play.
- The Aeros' power play unit continues to click like it has been doing all season, scoring 17 times in the last 10 games, including three goals over the last two contests. However, those three PPG are the only goals the Aeros have scored in the last 128:00, as they haven't tallied an even-strength marker since C Erik Westrum scored at 12:00 of the third period last Thursday against Hamilton. Houston has been outscored 8-0 in even-strength situations in its last two games - both losses.
- Houston has lost back-to-back game in regulation for just the fourth time this season. The Aeros haven't lost three straight regulation games in more than two seasons. It last happened 2/20-2/22/04. Houston is trying to avoid dropping back-to-back home games for the first time in more than one season, since 1/14-1/16/05.
- The Aeros are 18-5-1-2 for 39 points in 26 one-goal games, while Chicago is 9-6-3-6 for 27 points in 24 such games.

- The Aeros have won two straight against the Wolves for just the third time since joining the AHL in 2001-02. Houston's last three-game winning streak versus Chicago was from 2/10-3/3/01, and it hasn't won four in a row against the Wolves since a five-game run 4/9/95-1/11/97.
- Since joining the AHL, Houston is 17-15-9-4 versus Chicago, including a 11-5-5-2 home record and a 6-10-4-2 road mark.
- The Aeros have just eight wins in the last 24 matchups (8-10-6-0) but have points in 13 of those games.
- Since 14 of 23 regular-season meetings went to OT or a shootout from 1/9/03-2/12/05, the Aeros have played seven straight games that have ended in regulation. It's the first stretch that long without OT or a shootout since 1/24/99-3/19/00.
- Eleven of the last 16 meetings in Houston have been decided by one goal or finished in a tie.
