Americans Host New Year's Eve Rivalry Game against Chiefs

The Tri-City Americans will host the Spokane Chiefs tonight for their annual New Year's Eve game at the Toyota Center.

Tri-City has won the last four New Year's Eve games against the Chiefs. Most recently in 2019, Marc Lajoie scored in overtime to steal a 5-4 victory for the Americans. The goal came assisted by Sasha Mutala.

Tonight will be the fifth meeting between the two teams this season. Tri-City won the first game of their 14-game season series on October 2nd, but has fell to the Chiefs in their three most recent games. Luke Toporowski leads the series in head-to-head scoring with four goals and three assists. Tri-City has scored nine goals against the Chiefs this season, all scored by different scorers. Parker Bell, Tyson Greenway, and Dwayne Jean Jr. each have one goal and two assists for Tri-City against Spokane.

The Americans returned from the Christmas break on Tuesday as they fell 9-2 to the Winterhawks in Portland. Portland opened scoring 11:14 into the game with a power play goal. Less than two minutes later, the Americans tied the game with a power play goal as Connor Bouchard shoved in a rebound off a shot from Sam Huo. Petr Moravec also received an assist on the goal ... Portland quickly responded with a third straight power play goal and took a 2-1 lead into intermission. Portland brought a flurry of goals in the second and third periods, scoring seven straight to hold a 8-1 lead mid-third period. The Americans were finally able to respond as Petr Moravec scored with a wrist shot from the blue line on a delayed penalty. Moravec is on a three game point streak with two goals and two assists over that period. Sasha Mutala and Sam Huo received assists on the goal ... Nick Avakyan played the full game in net, stopping 31 of 40 shots faced.
