Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash. - Penalty trouble proved too much to overcome for the Spokane Chiefs on Thursday night as they lost to the Seattle Thunderbirds, 6-2 at Spokane Arena. Seattle finished the game 4-for-7 with the man advantage.

The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 7:47 of the first period with Reid Schaefer scored the first power play tally from the high slot, beating goalie Mason Beaupit through traffic in front.

Spokane responded to tie it at 1-1 five minutes later when German forward Yannick Proske found the back of the net, with assists to Bear Hughes and Saige Weinstein. The goal extended Proske's point streak to four games.

Seattle retook the lead at 7:25 of the second when rookie Sam Oremba picked up his third of the season, but Hughes answered at 17:01 to once again tie the game, this time at 2-2. With an assist on the play, recently acquired winger Chase Bertholet extended his point streak to five, with nine points (3G-6A) over that span.

The Thunderbirds snagged the lead for good with just 44 seconds left in the middle frame, taking advantage of a turnover to give Jared Davidson his 12th of the season.

Seattle piled on in the third, scoring power play goals at 2:13 (Matthew Rempe), 6:45 (Jeremy Hanzal) and 17:52 (Rempe) to pad their lead and put the game out of reach.

Spokane was outshot 32-34 on the night and finished 1-for-4 on the power play themselves. They hit the road Friday night to play in the annual New Year's Eve game versus the rival Tri-City Americans in Kennewick.
