Americans Defeat T-Birds

Kennewick,February 9, 2010 - The Tri-City Americans defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-2 Tuesday night at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

Seattle (14-33-5-4) took a 1-0 lead at 10:14 of the first period on a goal by Lindsay Nielsen. Charles Wells sent the puck behind the Tri-City net to Nielsen. Nielsen shot the puck at Americans goalie Drew Owsley-s right leg from behind the net and the puck deflected into the net for his ninth goal of the year.

Tri-City (39-13-0-2) outshot Seattle 11-10 in the first period.

The Americans tied the game 1-1 with a power-play goal at 5:25 of the second period by Sergei Drozd. Brooks Macek and Jordan Messier had assists on the goal.

The T-Birds went in front 2-1 at 12:45 of the second on a shorthanded goal by Charles Wells. Wells stole the puck from an Americans forward along the left boards in the Seattle zone. He broke up ice and used his speed to get past the defender to his right. Wells, a right-handed shot, came in alone on Owsley, faked a move right and then brought the puck to his backhand and lifted it over the sprawling goalie.

Jarrett Toll scored at 19:08 of the second to tie the game 2-2. Patrick Holland and Justin Feser had assists on the goal.

Seattle outshot Tri-City 13-9 in the second period and led 23-21 in total shots after two periods.

Messier scored at 10:50 of the third to put the Americans in front 3-2. Mason Wilgosh and Neal Prokop had the assists on the goal.

Tri-City outshot Seattle 9-4 in the third period and 29- 27 in the game.

Seattle goalie Michael Salmon made 26 saves on 29 shots and his record is now 0-4-0-0.

Owsley stopped 27 of 29 shots and his record is now 31-9-0-1.

The T-Birds take on the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday, February 12, at 7:35 p.m. at ShoWare Center.
