Allen Americans News Release
Allen, Texas - The Allen Americans, ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, announced today that the club has given Head Coach and General Manager of Hockey Operations Steve Martinson a new contract.
The new deal will keep the Minnesota native with the club through the 2020-21 season. In five years with the Americans, Martinson has won four championships, with the team set to begin another playoff campaign next Wednesday.
"Steve (Martinson) is one of the top coaches in hockey and we recognize that," said Allen Americans Owner Jack Gulati. "He has a lot of work to do in the coming weeks to bring another championship to Allen. Fans, you asked for long-term deal for Coach Martinson, and I'm happy to grant your wish. Now I need your help to put more butts in the seats.
Martinson won a championship in his first year of coaching, winning a title with the San Diego Gulls of the former WCHL, back in the 1995-96 season. In total, he has won 10 championships in 20 years behind the bench. In those 20 years, his teams have failed to qualify for the playoffs only once.
"I'm extremely pleased to be staying with the Americans," said Martinson. "My family really likes it here so I want to thank Jack (Gulati) personally for making it happen. Now it's time to focus on the upcoming playoffs."
In his 20 years of coaching, in four different leagues, Martinson has 941 wins behind the bench with 214 of those wins coming with Allen.
The Americans open the postseason next Wednesday night at Allen Event Center with their opponent yet to be determined. The Americans lead second place Colorado by three points, with two games remaining for Allen.
