American Association Game Recaps
May 22, 2012 - American Association (AA) News Release
Amarillo 8, Fargo-Moorhead 6
The RedHawks got a two-RBI double from 1B Marcos Rodriguez in the bottom of the ninth to cut their four-run deficit in half. But they couldn't make up the difference and fell to Amarillo, 8-6. The Sox got three hits from DH Tim Alberts in three at-bats. Alberts scored every time he got on base. The RedHawks shot out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the second inning. But Amarillo scored the next six runs and never trailed again. Sox 3B Garrett Rau also had three hits for his club, going 3-for-4 with two runs and a co-game high two RBI.
Sioux City 15, Lincoln 6
The Explorers scored three or more runs in four consecutive innings and turned a 2-1 deficit into a 15-6 win over Lincoln. The two teams combined for 27 hits - 17 from the Explorers. Sioux City got two home runs from C Ray Serrano, who went 3-for-5 with three runs and five RBI. Serrano led or co-led all players in hits, runs and RBI. Sioux City starting pitcher Nick Schumacher allowed seven hits in as many innings, giving up four runs while striking out eight Saltdogs batters. Lincoln got a three-run homer from DH Asif Shah in the seventh inning. But by then, the game was already out of hand. The homer was Shah's only hit, though he did walk twice.
Sioux Falls 5, St. Paul 3
Trailing 2-1 and having gone five innings without a run, Sioux Falls needed a spark. That's just what they got when DH Jared Bolden cleared the bases with a grand slam home run, turning their one-run disadvantage into a 5-2 lead. St. Paul scored once more but couldn't mount a comeback, losing, 5-3. The slam was Bolden's only hit of the night, as he went 1-for-3 with a run, a walk and four RBI. St. Paul LF Willie Cabrera plated one of the Saints' three runs, going 3-for-4.
Gary SouthShore 3, Kansas City 2
A total of eight innings of the contest between Gary SouthShore and Kansas City proved uneventful; however, a two-run T-Bones fourth wasn't enough to prevent the RailCats' three-run sixth from giving the road club the win, 3-2. In the decisive sixth inning, two costly Kansas City errors allowed the RailCats to score three unearned runs off Kansas City starter Josh Rainwater. Rainwater threw six innings, allowing three runs (zero earned) on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts. The RailCats had a staff day, with reliever Chris Allen taking over in the fourth inning and picking up his first win of the year.
Laredo 3, Winnipeg 1
Laredo RF Luis Uribe singled in two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie that had held since the third and giving the Lemurs a 3-1 win. Uribe went 2-for-4 and scored his club's first run before his two eighth-inning RBI. Despite allowing only one run in six innings of work, starting Lemurs pitcher Todd Privett didn't factor in the decision. The win, instead, went to reliever Garrett Sherrill, who threw two perfect innings in relief of Privett. The Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when 3B Amos Ramon singled in C Luis Alen. But Winnipeg wouldn't plate another run for the next seven frames.
Wichita 3, New Jersey 2 (11 innings)
After more than three and a half hours of play, Wichita leadoff SS Ryan Khoury got his first hit of the game. That hit in the 11th inning was the difference maker - a walkoff RBI double that plated C Salomon Manirguez and gave the Wingnuts a 3-2 win. The score had been locked at 2-2 since the seventh inning, when New Jersey LF Francisco Carabello 2B Gaetano Giunta from third in a fielder's choice RBI. Carabello had only one hit on the night, going 1-for-5 with an RBI. The final of five Wingnuts pitchers to toe the rubber, Josh Dew, picked up the win for the home team, throwing the final 1.1 innings and allowing one hit with one strikeout.
