Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
AMARILLO - The top third of the Sod Poodles lineup, Taylor Kohlwey, Ivan Castillo, and Edward Olivares, teamed for nine hits, seven runs, and six RBIs in an 8-6 win over Corpus Christi Saturday night before 7,386 fans at Hodgetown.
Trailing 7-2 after seven innings, the Hooks mounted a two-out rally in the eighth thanks to consecutive hits by Abraham Toro, Seth Beer, and Granden Goetzman.
With the Amarillo edge cut to two, Castillo made it an 8-5 game in the eighth with a sac fly to center, plating Brad Zunica, who opened the frame with a single.
J.J. Matijevic led off the Corpus Christi ninth and blasted a home run to right field on a 1-2 pitch from J.C. Cosme. It was the second round-tripper for Matijevic on the night, resulting in his fifth career multi-homer game.
Cosme dispatched the next three hitters to nail down his first Sod Poodles save.
The Hooks managed only solo home runs by Matijevic and Seth Beer over the first seven innings thanks to the work of lefty Nick Margevicius and Kazuhisa Makita.
Amarillo enjoyed a fast start as Olivares launched a two-run home run in the first off Enoli Paredes.
In the third, doubles by Kohlwey and Olivares made it a 3-1 contest.
Peter Van Gansen notched a big hit in the fifth, cracking a two-out, two-run single into center on a 1-2 pitch from Justin Ferrell, turning a one-run game into a 5-2 affair.
Castillo provided separation in the sixth with a two-run tater off Yohan Ramirez.
The series wraps up Sunday night as Brandon Bailey meets Amarillo's Ronald Bolanos. First pitch 6:05.
