Amarillo Gorillas News Release

AMARILLO, TX - Brent Hughes scored the game-winner while Keith Rowe and Scott Wray both had goals as the Gorillas defeated the Tulsa Oilers 3-2 on Sunday night in front of a crowd of 2,317 Jungle faithful. Jamie Vandespyker did well, stopping 25 of 27 shots and allowed no goals after the first period. Hughes was awarded the Nationwide Insurance Top Star of the Night with the go-ahead goal, while Rowe earned the second star behind a tying goal and Vandespyker was game's third star.

The first period began promisingly for the Gorillas. Keeping offensive control for nearly the first minute and a half, passes from Joe Guenther and Derek Hahn found Wray far right of the net. As Wray was looking for a cutting Guenther, the puck was somehow deflected into the goal, baffling Wray and Tulsa goaltender Chris King. The score did count however, the all-star's 20th goal of the year in only 25 games, and gave the Gorillas the early lead 1-0 just 1:28 into the contest.

Much to the chagrin of the Gorillas, the Oilers did not play from behind for long. While on a power play, passes from Jaroslav Cesky and Mike Possin met all-star Jim Dahl in front of the net. The winger was able to kick through his 25th goal and 50th point to knot the game up 1-1 at 4:55 of the first period.

The Oilers did not feel comfortable leaving the score tied going into the intermission, so they took advantage of two Amarillo infractions. ..for more on this story, visit www.amarillogorillas.com
