CORPUS CHRISTI - Sod Poodles relivers permitted just three hits over 6 1/3 innings in a 3-0 victory over the Hooks Wednesday night at Whataburger Field.
Tristan English cracked a two-out solo home run in the first inning, accounting for the lone earned run of the contest.
Hooks starter Rhett Kouba, the Astros Minor League Player of the Month for April, absorbed the tough-luck loss, struck out seven against two runs and five hits while going six innings for a second straight performance.
Kouba sports a 1.13 ERA over his last three outings. During this stretch, he has struck out 23 without issuing a walk over 16.0 innings. The opposition has managed only nine hits.
Cole McDonald worked two frames in relief for CC, allowing an unearned run. Cesar Gomez pitched a scoreless ninth.
Austin Pope earned the win for Amarillo, with five of his seven outs by way of strikeout. Sam Houston State product Kyle Backhus pitched the final two innings for his fourth save.
