Spokane Chiefs News Release
The Spokane Chiefs' 2022 training camp will feature 82 players and prospects divided into four teams, each named after notable Chiefs alumni. Two goaltenders and two defensemen were chosen as the teams' namesakes in an effort to recognize current Chiefs Mason Beaupit and Graham Sward after they were selected in the 2022 NHL Draft, with Beaupit going to the San Jose Sharks (4th round, 108th overall) and Sward going to the Nashville Predators (5th round, 146th overall).
The second team is named after Spokane Chiefs defenseman Bryan McCabe, who played 152 games (35G-145A-184TP) with the team from 1992-95 after being acquired from the Medicine Hat Tigers.
In his first full season as a Chief, McCabe earned his spot in the team's record book by posting career highs in goals (22), assists (62) and total points (84). He was named to the WHL (West) First All-Star Team at the end of the season.
T-4th Most Goals by Defenseman in Single Season (tied with Brenden Kitchton, 2010-11)
3rd Most Assists by Defenseman in Single Season
2nd Most Points by Defenseman in Single Season
McCabe then served as the organization's 10th captain during the 1994-95 season, in which he put up 53 points (14G-39A) in 42 games before being traded to the Brandon Wheat Kings.
McCabe was one of seven defensemen named to the Spokane Chiefs' initial list of Top 25 Chiefs in 25 Years during the organization's 25th anniversary celebration in 2010.
From St. Catherines, Ontario, McCabe is also a two-time World Junior Championship gold medalist with Team Canada (1993-94, 1994-95) and was named to the WJC All-Star Team in 1994-95. The 6-foot-2 blueliner was also named the WJC Best Defenseman that same year, after posting 12 points on three goals and nine assists in seven games as one of Canada's alternate captains.
After he was selected 40th overall by the New York Islanders in the 1993 NHL Draft, McCabe played 1,135 career games in the NHL. McCabe spent three seasons with the Islanders ("C" in 1997-98), two with the Vancouver Canucks ("A"), one with the Chicago Blackhawks ("A"), seven with the Toronto Maple Leafs ("A" in last six) and three with the Florida Panthers ("C"). He finished his career with the New York Rangers after being traded from Florida during the 2010-11 season.
