Montreal Alouettes News Release
Montreal, February 5, 2013 - The Montreal Alouettes announced on Tuesday that the club has acquired non-import running back Jerome Messam via a trade with the Edmonton Eskimos in exchange for a sixth round selection (45th total) in the 2013 CFL Canadian Draft.
Messam (6'03'', 245 lbs.) rushed for 1,057 yards on 195 carries and scored six touchdowns with the Eskimos in 2011, on his way to being named the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian before signing with the Miami Dolphins in February. The former product of Graceland University was the first Canadian player to crack the CFL's 1,000-yard rushing plateau in a single season since 2000.
The Brampton, Ontario native attended the Dolphins' 2012 training camp and had one reception for 10 yards and one carry for a two-yard loss in a pair of pre-season games. The 27-year-old later rejoined the Eskimos in time for the Labour Day Classic and finished the season rushing for 168 yards and one touchdown while also adding eight catches for 76 yards in just nine games.
"We are pleased to have Jerome join our team. We look forward to helping Jerome regain his form from his MOP season in 2011," explained Alouettes General Manager Jim Popp. "Jerome should add another dimension to our ever-changing offence. It will be fun to watch our new offensive coaches implement these newly-acquired offensive players with our current group of outstanding players."
The Alouettes also announced that they have granted non-import defensive end Luc Mullinder his release. During his nine-year career, the veteran suited-up for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and most recently the Alouettes, recording a combined 112 defensive tackles, 16 sacks and one interception.
