Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - James Jurries made sure that the Greenville Braves would head into the Southern League All-Star break on a winning note as he singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for a 2-1 victory over the Tennessee Smokies Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Jurries collected a team high three hits, and G-Braves starter Matt Belisle (5-7) went nine innings, giving up only one unearned run, to get the win.
The Smokies jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Papo Bolivar RBI single in the first inning. The G-Braves tied the game in the third frame with an RBI double from Lee Evans off of Smokies starter Juan Pena that plated Kelly Johnson.
The game remained knotted at one until the bottom of the ninth. Pinch hitter Bill McCarthy lined a one-out single up the middle that just missed Smokies reliever Kevin Sprague (3-3) to put the winning run at first. Lee Evans drew an intentional walk with two down, and Jason Fitzgerald followed with an infield single that loaded the bases. The lefthander Sprague was removed in favor of Josh Kinney to create a righty versus righty match-up against the third baseman Jurries. Jurries won the battle and the game for Greenville with a two ball, two strike flare over the head of Tennessee second baseman Chris Weekly.
Evans, Ryan Langerhans, and Belisle all had two hits in helping the G-Braves win the rubber match of the three game series. Chris Weekly picked up three of Tennessee's seven hits in the losing cause.
