Mudcats Outlast Rays

Orlando Rays News Release

Zebulon, NC – Josh Wilson tripled in Drew Niles in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Carolina Mudcats rallied past the Orlando Rays for a 9-8 win at Five County Stadium Sunday.

Carolina twice rallied to tie Orlando, including pushing three runs across in the bottom of the sixth inning to knot the game at 8-8. Both teams traded goose egg for goose egg over the next four innings until Carolina won it in the 11th.

Despite squandering a 7-1 lead in the sixth inning, Orlando's patchwork pitching staff fared much better in tonight's game than they did last night, allowing nine runs on 11 hits over 10 2/3 innings. Last night Carolina hitters torched Orlando pitching for 15 runs on 17 hits in the Mudcats 15-4 win.

Dan DeMent hit a pair of home runs in the loss, his second and third homers of the season. Both came off Mudcats starter Todd Moser, who the Rays chased after 4 2/3 innings after allowing six earned runs on seven hits. Orlando wouldn't fare quite as well against the Carolina bullpen, as five Mudcats relievers limited Rays hitters to two runs over the final 6 1/3 innings. Dan Grummitt and Juan Salas had two hits apiece, with Salas scoring two runs and Grummitt collecting two RBI.

Orlando's overworked staff will get a much-needed break as the Southern League heads into the All Star break on Monday. Orlando will send three representatives – all starting pitchers - to the game: RHP Jim Magrane, RHP Jose Veras and LHP Jon Switzer. The Rays continue the second half of the Southern League season on Thursday, July 10 at Cracker Jack Stadium as Orlando kicks off a home-and-home series with their in-state rivals, the Jacksonville Suns. Game time is 7:05.
