Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers franchise-record 12 game winning streak concluded Thursday afternoon with a 7-0 shutout loss to the York Revolution at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Revs pitcher Zac Grotz (1-0) pitched his first career complete game shutout, allowing just six hits while striking out nine.
Grotz threw 112 pitches and walked just one. Prior to his Thursday start, the California native Grotz had never pitched more than six innings in any professional appearance.
Lancaster reached the right-hander for a pair of singles in the first and two more in the fourth. Both times, the hits came with two outs. Ryan Casteel had the only extra-base hit for the 'Stormers with a one-out double in the ninth.
While Grotz may have shined on the hill, it was former Barnstormer Tyler Clark who dealt damage at the plate. With two outs in the second, Clark smashed a three-run homer, his first of the year, off former roommate Tommy Shirley to left-center to cap a four-run second after Rubi Silva beat out a bunt single to drive home the game's first run. Clark added a single and a walk to his productive line Thursday and was the difference maker offensively. Ryan Dent added a solo shot of his own in the sixth.
Tommy Shirley (3-1) took the loss for Lancaster, the club's first since the opening game of the Sugar Land Skeeters back on May 8th.
All told, the Revolution put 14 hits on the board, including four by Silva. The bottom three in the order were a combined 8-for-10 with the two home runs.
The Barnstormers shutout loss is just their second of the season, both coming against York in a day game. Lancaster's first win streak of the season, a five-game skein, ended in a similar manner on May 6.
Lancaster's pitching staff racked up 13 strikeouts, for a total of 35 in the series. Tommy Shirley otherwise fanned nine batters, including striking out the side in the fifth inning. John Anderson and Lancaster newcomer Huascar Brazoban each pitched scoreless innings with Anderson tacking three K's onto the column and Brazoban earning his first strikeout with the 'Stormers. Jesus Sanchez pitched the ninth, allowing a run and three hits.
With the loss, the Barnstormers were still able to take two of three from the division rival Revolution, making it seven consecutive series wins and stand 18-6 past the opening third of the first half of Atlantic League baseball.
Lancaster opens a three-game series at Southern Maryland Friday evening. Joe Gardner (2-1) makes the start for Lancaster against right-hander Casey
Delgado. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.
NOTES: With the 13 strikeouts, the Barnstormers amassed 35 in the series...Lancaster hurlers have fanned 202 in 206 innings on the season...There was only one total error in the last two games of the homestand after 17 were assessed in the first four contests...Thursday's game was only the sixth time this season that the Barnstormers did not score the first run of the game.
